Lozells and East Handsworth by-election: latest news1.13.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 26th May 2009
Electors in Lozells and East Handsworth have a by-election on 4 June, the same day as the European elections, to fill a vacancy on Birmingham City Council following the resignation of a Labour councillor. Liberal Democrat campaigner, Sabirul Islam, is building strongly on the second place he achieved in the last Council elections in the ward last year. The Conservatives finished way down the poll with just 4.5% of the vote and cannot win this time either. On the doorstep local people are telling Sabirul Islam that it is time for change, as he listens to their concerns. Sabirul said: "It is coming across loud and clear from everyone that enough is enough. People are fed up with Gordon Brown's mishandling of the economy." Residents are also saying they are fed up with Labour councillors taking them for granted. Sabirul said: "In other areas, local residents see Lib Dem councillors working hard for the whole community and keeping touch all year round.
